Role: Hardware Design
Engineer
Location: Redmond, WA
(locals only)
Duration: 6+ months
JOB DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a highly
motivated and seasoned [Hardware Design Engineer] to develop, design and
maintain mobile device automation test equipment, including robotic testers and
other test automation infrastructure through fast-paced product development
cycles. You absolutely must be able to “think outside the box” and be
resourceful enough to rapidly develop your ideas into working prototypes, often
without assistance or specifications. The successful candidate will join
a team of Hardware Design Engineers to design, develop, maintain and
troubleshoot automation hardware and test appliances that enable automated
testing of devices not normally designed to be tested through automation.
The automation systems include robotic testers, custom power supplies,
specialized signal switching circuits, plastic enclosures and many other kinds
of hardware, some of which is black-box and may be completely undocumented.
Job
Responsibilities
• Design, develop and
maintain robotic test automation systems. This will include electro-mechanical
systems such as synchro/servos, conductive bearings, flex cables, solenoids,
power supplies, gearing, plastic assemblies and a wide variety of other
components.
• Be readily able to
examine a problem and create a conceptual design that could be developed into a
working solution in short order.
• Design, develop,
integrate, debug, document, and support functional test solutions for complex
printed circuit board assemblies and systems.
• Partner with
internal teams to develop and support test solutions for new product testing.
Leverage existing solutions as appropriate.
• Design and develop
schematics, state diagrams and drawings to support design and development of a
given solution.
• Assemble
prototypes, solder circuit boards and perform testing to verify operation.
• Design test
automation solutions to enable work on black-box hardware, often requiring
reverse-engineering.
Skills Required
• Excellent
communication, teamwork, and documentation skills.
• Strong and reliable
work ethic; able to drive a project to completion, often without access to
management.
• Experience building
or servicing robotics or other devices that use synchros, servos, motors and
solenoids.
• Be able to create
(from scratch) and edit existing circuit board designs and schematics (in
EagleCAD initially, and Altium for more complex designs).
• Ability to
troubleshoot to root-cause and solve complex problems, and rapidly design
viable and cost effective solutions.
• Demonstrable
knowledge with USB technology and specification for USB 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0.
• Job involves very
detailed technical tasks - must understand product specifications as well as
test equipment operation, including load meters, oscilloscopes, current loops,
multi-meters and power supplies.
• Must have expertise
in SMD soldering and Circuit Board QA.
• Knowledge on
standard communication protocols including RS-232 and RS-485 – (I2C
and PM Bus is a big plus).
• Experience in
hardware prototype bring-up, debug, fault detection, failure analysis, and
yield improvement.
• 4+ years of
experience developing and supporting test solutions for electronic products.
• BS in Electrical
Engineering or Computer Engineering (MSEE preferred), or equivalent work
experience.
Skills
Desired
• Experience with
Orcad, SPICE, Cadence Allegro and Altium is preferred (Experience with EagleCAD
is required).
• C/C++ coding skills
are desirable, to the point of being able to write automation hardware
test applications.
• Experience with
AutoCAD and/or Solidworks.
• Past experience
with Smartphone, PDA or other Windows Mobile device highly desirable (repair
and/or test).
• Experience with
mobile device battery technologies and battery charging systems
· Experience
assembling plastic enclosures using welding solvents such as MEK
